PTIN Renewal Deadline 2027: Key Dates, Fee and What Happens If You Miss It

Quick answer: Every PTIN expires on 31 December 2026. Renew it online before then for $18.75. It takes about 15 minutes. If you miss the deadline, you can still renew in January, but you can't legally prepare any paid federal return until the renewal goes through. Each return filed without a valid PTIN can attract a $65 penalty, up to $33,000 a year. Enrolled agents have to renew their PTIN and may also be due for EA renewal by 31 January 2027.

Every year we get the same panicked messages in early January: "My PTIN expired. Can I still file this client's return?" The short answer is no, not until you've renewed. The good news is that renewing is cheap, quick and can be done any day of the year. This guide covers the 2027 dates, what really happens if you miss them, and how to fix it fast.

PTIN renewal 2027: key dates at a glance

Date What happens
Mid-October 2026 Renewal for 2027 opens in the IRS online PTIN system
1 November 2026 EA renewal window opens for SSNs ending in 7, 8 or 9 (and EAs without an SSN)
31 December 2026 All 2026 PTINs expire
1 January 2027 onwards Late renewal is still possible, but you can't prepare paid returns until it's processed
31 January 2027 Deadline to file Form 8554 for EAs in the current renewal group

The IRS confirmed these PTIN dates in its 4 November 2026 reminder (IR-2026-130). Paper renewals on Form W-12 take about six weeks, so if you're renewing by mail, post it no later than mid-November.

Who needs to renew a PTIN?

Anyone who prepares, or helps prepare, a federal tax return or refund claim for pay needs a valid PTIN. That includes:

  • Enrolled agents, even in a year when you don't prepare any returns
  • CPAs and attorneys who prepare returns
  • Seasonal and uncredentialed preparers, including Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP) participants
  • Preparers based outside the US who prepare US federal returns for pay, including many of our students in India, the UAE and Australia

If you only do your own return or a relative's return for free, you don't need one.

How much does PTIN renewal cost for 2027?

The fee is $18.75. It's nonrefundable and nontransferable. There's no separate late fee: you pay the same $18.75 whether you renew in October or in March. The real cost of renewing late is the work you can't do in the meantime.

What happens if you miss the PTIN renewal deadline?

Your PTIN doesn't disappear on 1 January. It becomes inactive, and that has practical consequences:

1. You can't prepare paid returns

Until your renewal is processed, you aren't allowed to prepare or sign any federal return for compensation. In late January, when clients start sending their W-2s, that can cost you days of billable work.

2. Penalties per return

Under IRC §6695(c), a preparer who doesn't include a valid identifying number on a return can be fined. For returns filed in 2027, the inflation-adjusted penalty is $65 per return, up to $33,000 per calendar year. Older articles, including earlier versions of this one, quoted $50 or $500, but those figures are out of date.

3. Disciplinary risk

Repeatedly preparing returns without a valid PTIN can lead to action from the IRS, including referral to the Office of Professional Responsibility. For EAs, that puts your credential at risk, not just your fee income.

4. E-file problems

Your e-file software and EFIN setup depend on a current PTIN. An expired number can cause returns to be held or rejected, which delays your clients' refunds.

Missed it? Here's what to do now

  1. Renew online straight away. Log in to the IRS PTIN system, select "Renew my PTIN", check your details and pay the $18.75. Online renewals are usually confirmed the same day.
  2. Stop preparing paid returns until you have confirmation.
  3. Locked out or stuck? Call the IRS PTIN Information Line on 877-613-7846.
  4. Check your CE. Your PTIN account shows the continuing education reported under your number, which is useful if you're also an EA or an AFSP participant.

Enrolled agents: two renewals, not one

This catches EAs out every cycle. PTIN renewal and EA renewal are separate.

  • PTIN: every EA, every year, by 31 December.
  • EA enrollment (Form 8554): every three years, based on the last digit of your SSN. If yours ends in 7, 8 or 9, or you don't have an SSN, your window is 1 November 2026 to 31 January 2027. The fee is $140, and you'll need your 72 CE hours, including ethics, for the cycle.

Our enrolled agent renewal guide covers the CE rules and the Form 8554 steps in detail.

What's new for 2027

PTIN messages now come from the IRS Tax Professional Management Office (TPMO), a new office that brings together the teams handling PTINs, the EA program and preparer oversight. Your PTIN account is where those messages appear, along with the number of Form 1040s filed under your PTIN and your AFSP progress. Make sure your email address there is current.

Frequently asked questions

When does my PTIN expire?

All PTINs expire on 31 December each year, whenever you got yours. A PTIN obtained in 2026 expires on 31 December 2026.

Can I renew my PTIN after 31 December?

Yes. The renewal option stays open all year. You just can't prepare paid returns while your PTIN is expired.

Is there a late fee for PTIN renewal?

No. It's $18.75 whenever you renew. The risk is the $65-per-return penalty and the lost work if you prepare returns without a valid PTIN.

Do enrolled agents need to renew their PTIN every year?

Yes. All EAs must hold a valid PTIN every year, even if they don't prepare returns. This is separate from EA renewal, which happens every three years.

How long does PTIN renewal take?

About 15 minutes online, with confirmation usually the same day. Paper renewals on Form W-12 take about six weeks.

I'm a tax preparer outside the US. Do I still need to renew?

Yes. If you prepare US federal returns for pay, you need a current PTIN wherever you live, and the renewal process online is the same.

The bottom line

Put a reminder in your calendar for the first week of December. Spending $18.75 and fifteen minutes now is far better than losing a week of the filing season to an expired PTIN. If you're an EA with an SSN ending in 7, 8 or 9, file your Form 8554 at the same time.
