NAEA Membership — Benefits, Cost & How to Get It Free

Updated June 21, 2026 by Vicky Sarin
Quick answer

The National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) is the professional body for EAs, offering continuing education, advocacy and community. Standard membership is $295 a year (as of 2026) — but you can get a complimentary 2-year NAEA membership free when you buy the Surgent EA Review course through Eduyush. Membership is valuable, but note it's voluntary — you don't have to join NAEA to be an Enrolled Agent.

What Is the NAEA?

The National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) is the national professional association for Enrolled Agents in the US, founded in 1972. It exists to protect, promote and support the EA profession — lobbying on tax policy, educating the public on what EAs do, and giving members the education, tools and community to run a stronger practice.

One important clarification up front: NAEA is a private professional association, separate from the IRS. Your EA licence comes from the IRS, not from NAEA — so joining is a career choice, not a legal requirement.

NAEA Membership Benefits

Membership bundles education, advocacy, visibility and savings. The CPE alone can offset much of the dues:

NAEA membership benefits at a glance.
Benefit What you get
Continuing education (CPE) Up to 40 free CE hours a year, live and on-demand (per NAEA) — a meaningful chunk of your 72-hour cycle.
EA Journal & updates The bimonthly EA Journal plus weekly e-newsletters on hot tax topics.
Advocacy A stronger voice in Washington — NAEA lobbies Congress and the IRS on behalf of EAs (incl. the annual Capitol Hill Fly-In).
Community The member WebBoard, state chapters and affiliates for peer support.
Directory listing A profile in NAEA's public "Find a Tax Expert" directory to attract clients.
Member discounts Exclusive savings — e.g. a free Verifyle Pro account, insurance options, and a discounted TheTaxBook research library.
✅ CPE tie-in

NAEA's free CE comes from an IRS-approved provider, so it counts toward EA renewal. See how it fits your cycle in our EA CPE requirements guide.

How Much Does NAEA Membership Cost?

NAEA has a few membership tiers. As of 2026:

NAEA membership tiers and fees (as of 2026 — verify on naea.org).
Tier Who it's for Fee
Regular / Associate Enrolled Agents and tax pros $295 / year
Pathway to EA (associate), years 1–2 Those working toward the EA Complimentary
Pathway to EA (associate), years 3–10 Continuing toward or newly enrolled $35 / year
Emeritus Fully retired EAs $74 / year

The Pathway to EA tier runs for 10 years total, after which you convert to an Associate or Regular membership. If your state has an NAEA chapter, you're enrolled in it automatically at no extra cost. Fees do change, so confirm the current figure on naea.org before you join.

NAEA vs NATP, and State Chapters

NAEA vs NATP: the closest alternative is the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP). The simplest way to choose: NAEA is EA-specific — built around the Enrolled Agent credential, with heavy advocacy for EAs in Washington — while NATP is broader, serving all tax preparers (EAs, CPAs and unenrolled preparers) with a wide general education catalogue. If your professional identity is the EA credential and you value advocacy for it, NAEA fits best; if you want general tax-preparer resources regardless of credential, NATP may suit. Many practitioners join both.

State chapters: where your US state has an NAEA chapter, you're enrolled automatically at no extra cost, and chapters often run local events and CE. EAs based in India or the GCC simply won't have a local chapter — which is fine; the national membership, CE and "Find a Tax Expert" directory listing all still apply.

How to Get NAEA Membership Free with Eduyush

Here's the part most candidates miss. Every Surgent EA Review course includes a complimentary 2-year NAEA associate membership — and Eduyush is an authorised Surgent reseller, so you get that benefit when you buy through us, at India/regional pricing.

How the Surgent–NAEA partnership works

It runs through the official Surgent–NAEA "Pathway to EA" partnership (announced by NAEA). To claim it:

  1. Enrol in the Surgent EA Review course via Eduyush.
  2. With your consent, Surgent shares your name and email with NAEA solely to set up the membership.
  3. NAEA emails your membership details — typically within about two weeks of purchase.
  4. You enjoy two years of complimentary associate membership; after that it's $35/year if you choose to continue.

What the free membership includes

Honest small print

The membership is the Pathway-to-EA associate tier, and participation is optional — you can opt out. It's a genuine perk worth roughly $295 a year, but it's a complimentary associate membership via the Surgent partnership, not the full lifetime of regular membership. Offer terms are set by Surgent/NAEA and can change.

Pass the EA and get 2 years of NAEA free

Surgent EA Review via Eduyush — adaptive A.S.A.P. prep that targets your weak areas to save study time, ReadySCORE readiness tracking, access until you pass, and a complimentary 2-year NAEA membership.

NAEA Membership FAQs

Is NAEA membership worth it?

For active EAs, often yes — the up-to-40 free CE hours a year can offset much of the $295 dues on their own, before you count advocacy, the directory listing and member discounts. If you rarely use CE or community features, the value is lower. It's a judgement call based on how much you'll use it.

Do EAs have to join NAEA?

No. NAEA membership is entirely voluntary. Your authority to practise comes from your IRS enrollment, not from NAEA — you can be a fully licensed Enrolled Agent without ever joining.

What's the difference between NAEA membership and IRS enrollment?

IRS enrollment is the federal licence that makes you an Enrolled Agent — earned by passing the SEE (or via IRS experience) and maintained with Form 8554 and CE. NAEA is an optional private association you can join for education, advocacy and community. One is your credential; the other is a professional membership.

How do I join NAEA?

Apply on naea.org/join and pick your tier, or get two years free by enrolling in the Surgent EA Review course through Eduyush — NAEA then emails your membership setup within about two weeks.

Does NAEA membership count toward my CPE?

Yes — NAEA offers up to 40 free CE hours a year from an IRS-approved provider, which counts toward the 72 hours EAs need every three-year cycle (including the ethics minimums).
