Quick answer

To become a CIA: (1) confirm eligibility β€” a bachelor's degree plus 2 years of internal audit experience is the standard path. (2) Create a free CCMS profile at ccms.theiia.org. (3) Submit your application with proof of identity and education and pay the fee ($120 member / $240 non-member). (4) Wait for approval, then register and schedule each of the three exam parts through Pearson VUE. (5) Pass all three parts (score 600+), verify work experience, and collect your designation. You have three years from approval to complete the program.

Key takeaways
  • The entire CIA process runs through the IIA's CCMS portal β€” application, exam scheduling, score access, experience verification, and certificate download.
  • Become an IIA member before submitting your application β€” member pricing saves over $500 across all three exam parts combined.
  • Online proctored testing was discontinued on 27 May 2025; all exams must now be taken at an authorised Pearson VUE test centre.
  • The IIA updated its scoring process on 1 April 2026 β€” you now receive one official result within three weeks, not a preliminary score on exam day.
  • ACCA qualified members and active U.S. CPA licence holders receive automatic exemptions β€” but you must declare these on the application form.
  • Exam registrations are valid for 180 days; if you do not sit within that window, the fee is forfeited with no refund.

Whether you are a first-year internal auditor or a seasoned risk professional formalising your credentials, the CIA application path follows the same four-step framework: apply, test, verify experience, and renew. This guide walks through every stage in the order the IIA's CCMS presents them, with current fees, timelines, and the traps candidates hit most often.

Should You Pursue the CIA?

The CIA fits some profiles better than others. Find yours before committing time and money.

Your profile CIA fit Why
Internal auditor (any level) Excellent Day-job experience maps directly to Parts 1 and 2; work experience requirement is often already in progress
ACCA qualified member Excellent Both education and work experience requirements waived β€” fastest application path of any profile
Active U.S. CPA licence holder Excellent Education requirement waived; adds internal audit credential to a financial reporting credential
External auditor / Big 4 Strong AUD and risk-control knowledge transfers well; CIA opens CAE and internal audit leadership roles
Risk / compliance professional Strong Governance, risk, and control domains align with existing expertise; Part 3 is the natural extension
Finance professional (non-audit) Possible Feasible with focused study; work experience verification may require a role change

Two Realistic Timelines

These are the stages every CIA candidate must complete. Your three-year program window starts from the date your application is approved β€” not from registration.

⏱ Fast track β€” 6 to 12 months (ACCA, active CPA, or strong IA background)
Week 1
Create CCMS profile, submit application and documents, start studying immediately
Week 2–4
Application approved; register and schedule Part 1
Month 2–8
Sit all 3 parts β€” one every 6 to 8 weeks
Month 8–12
Experience verified β†’ designation awarded
Standard track β€” 12 to 24 months (new to internal audit, limited IA background)
Month 1–2
CCMS application + begin structured study for Part 1
Month 3–14
Sit all 3 parts at a pace that fits work commitments
Month 14–24
Complete 2-year experience requirement β†’ designation awarded
Important

Many guides quote a 3-month CIA timeline. That is achievable only with 10+ years of internal audit experience and near full-time study. Plan around the track that matches your actual starting point β€” missing the 3-year program window and being forced to retake passed exams is the costliest mistake candidates make.

Step 1 β€” Confirm Your Eligibility

The IIA sets eligibility based on education level. Your education tier determines the work experience required as an exit requirement β€” not an entry requirement. You do not need work experience completed before applying; you must verify it before your designation is awarded.

Education level Work experience required Status
Bachelor's degree or higher 2 years in internal auditing or equivalent Most common
Active IAP designation 5 years + Part 2 and Part 3 only (Part 1 waived) Accelerated
No college degree 5 years in internal auditing or equivalent Possible

Exemptions for Existing Credential Holders

ACCA Qualified Members

Both education and work experience requirements are waived. Your application goes into pending status while the IIA verifies active membership β€” no action needed from you.

U.S. Active CPA Licence Holders

Education requirement only is waived. Work experience verification remains required. Licence must be active at the time of application β€” expired licences do not qualify.

πŸ’‘ Study tip

Exemptions are not applied automatically. You must complete the relevant fields on the CCMS application form. Missing this causes unnecessary delays while administrators request documentation you do not need to provide.

Step 2 β€” Create Your CCMS Profile and Submit Your Application

Every CIA candidate applies through the IIA's Certification Candidate Management System (CCMS) β€” the single portal for applications, exam scheduling, score access, experience verification, CPE reporting, and certificate download. Creating a profile is free.

1

Go to ccms.theiia.org and create your IIA Global Account. Use the email address you want associated with your CIA for life.

2

Ensure your profile name exactly matches your government-issued photo ID. A mismatch on exam day prevents you from sitting β€” correct it beforehand using "Submit a Name Change Request."

3

If joining as an IIA member, confirm membership is fully processed and visible in CCMS before submitting. Member pricing is applied at the point of payment β€” it cannot be applied retroactively.

4

Select the CIA program in CCMS, upload required documents, and pay the application fee. All fees are final β€” non-refundable and non-transferable once submitted.

Fee item IIA member Non-member Member saving
Application fee $120 $240 Save $120
Part 1 exam $310 $445 Save $135
Part 2 exam $280 $415 Save $135
Part 3 exam $280 $415 Save $135
IIA annual membership ~$100 β€” β€”
Total (3 parts) ~$990 + membership ~$1,515 Net saving ~$425
πŸ“‹ Documents to upload in CCMS
  • Government-issued photo ID β€” passport, driver's licence, military ID, or alien registration card; must be valid, unexpired, and a plastic card with photo (paper or electronic IDs not accepted)
  • Proof of education β€” degree copy, official transcripts, university confirmation letter, or academic evaluation service letter; not required if you hold an active IAP designation
Important

Documents are not reviewed until your application is submitted with payment. Uploading before paying leaves them in a permanent pending state. Once payment is processed, you have 90 days to complete any remaining application steps.

Step 3 β€” Register for and Schedule Each Exam Part

Exam registration is separate from the program application. You register for each part individually β€” no requirement to register all three at once, and the IIA does not prescribe a required order.

2025 change β€” online proctoring discontinued

The IIA discontinued online proctored testing on 27 May 2025. All CIA exams must now be taken at an authorised Pearson VUE test centre. There is no remote testing option.

1

Log in to CCMS and go to Manage My Program. Select the exam part and pay the exam fee.

2

Once payment is complete, select Access Pearson VUE from your CCMS homepage. Your pre-approved exam appears β€” select a date, time, and test centre.

3

Schedule as early as possible. Walk-ins are not accepted. Popular slots fill quickly.

4

Your exam authorisation window is 180 days from registration payment. If you do not sit within this window, the fee is forfeited with no refund.

The Three CIA Exam Parts

Part Title Questions Time Heaviest domain
Part 1 Internal Audit Fundamentals 125 MCQ 150 min Ethics and Professionalism (30%)
Part 2 Internal Audit Engagement 100 MCQ 120 min Engagement Planning (50%)
Part 3 Internal Audit Function 100 MCQ 120 min Internal Audit Operations (35%)

Step 4 β€” Sit for the Exam

Arrive at the Pearson VUE test centre at least 30 minutes before your appointment. Check-in requires biometric verification and a valid government-issued photo ID matching your CCMS name exactly.

βœ… Accepted ID at test centre
  • Government-issued passport
  • Government-issued driver's licence
  • Military ID
  • Alien registration card (green card)
  • Government plastic card with photo and signature (local language, issued in country of testing)
❌ Not accepted at test centre
  • Employee ID or work badge
  • University or college ID
  • Insurance card
  • Expired identification of any kind
  • Electronic or paper/laminated ID
  • Any ID not matching your CCMS name exactly

Step 5 β€” Receive Your Results

2026 scoring change β€” no more same-day results

The IIA updated its exam scoring process on 1 April 2026. You no longer receive a preliminary score on exam day. You now receive a single official result via email within three weeks of your exam date. Candidates testing in the June 2026 window should allow up to eight weeks β€” this returns to three weeks from September 2026.

Outcome Score Next step
Pass 600 or above Register for the next part, or proceed to experience verification if all parts are complete
Did not pass Below 600 Re-register when ready; no mandatory waiting period beyond your 180-day window and program expiry

Step 6 β€” Verify Work Experience and Receive Your Designation

Work experience is an exit requirement β€” not an entry requirement. Your CIA designation will not be awarded until the IIA confirms you meet the experience threshold for your education level. Once confirmed, your designation appears on your CCMS account within 7–14 business days.

Step 7 β€” Maintain Your CIA: Annual CPE

The CIA must be renewed annually by 31 December each year through CCMS. You must complete 40 CPE hours per year β€” at least 2 hours must be in ethics. Failure to renew places your designation in inactive status.

Six Application Mistakes That Delay or Cost Candidates

1 β€” Joining IIA after paying the application fee

Member pricing applies at the point of payment β€” there is no retroactive adjustment. Join, confirm membership is visible in CCMS, then submit and pay.

2 β€” Uploading documents before paying

The IIA does not review documents until payment is submitted. Uploading early does nothing β€” documents stay in pending until the application payment is processed.

3 β€” Registering for an exam before you are ready to study

Once you pay the exam registration fee, the 180-day clock starts. If you do not sit within that window, the fee is forfeited. Only register when you have a realistic study plan already underway.

4 β€” Name mismatch between CCMS and photo ID

Pearson VUE checks your CCMS name against your ID at the test centre. If they do not match, you will not be admitted and will forfeit the exam fee.

5 β€” Not declaring ACCA or CPA exemptions on the application

The exemption is not applied automatically. Complete the relevant fields on the application form or your application is held while administrators request proof you do not need to provide.

6 β€” Letting the program window expire without requesting an extension

If your three-year window expires, you must reapply and retake all exam parts β€” including any you already passed. Request a one-year extension through CCMS before expiry if you need more time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to complete the CIA certification?

Candidates have up to three years from application approval. Working professionals with strong internal audit backgrounds typically finish in 6–12 months; the IIA reports the average is under two and a half years.

Do I need to take the CIA exam parts in order?

No. The IIA does not prescribe a required order. Most candidates begin with Part 1 because it covers foundational IIA Standards that appear throughout Parts 2 and 3 β€” but this is a strategic preference, not a rule.

Can I take the CIA exam online from home?

No. The IIA discontinued online proctored testing on 27 May 2025. All CIA exams are now administered exclusively at authorised Pearson VUE test centres.

What is the passing score for the CIA exam?

A scaled score of 600 out of 750 is required to pass each part. This is not a raw percentage of correct answers β€” the IIA uses scaled scoring to ensure comparability across different exam administrations.

How quickly will I receive my CIA exam results?

From 1 April 2026, the IIA delivers a single official result within three weeks of your exam date. Candidates in the June 2026 window should allow up to eight weeks.

Are study materials included with CIA registration?

No. Study materials are not included with the application or exam registration. The most widely used options are Surgent CIA Review (available via Eduyush), Gleim, and Becker β€” the IIA's official preparation partner.
