ACCA After B.Com: Exemptions, Papers Left, Fees, and the Smart Way In

If you have a B.Com degree, ACCA is genuinely one of the most accessible global accounting qualifications available to you. You get five paper exemptions, skip the entire Knowledge level, and can potentially have FR exempted too if you have passed DipIFR. But — and this is the part most guides skip — a significant number of B.Com students who enrol in ACCA do not complete it. Not because the qualification is too hard, but because they did not test themselves realistically before committing. This guide will walk you through the smart way to approach ACCA after B.Com: what you are exempt from, what is left, what it costs, and why we recommend a specific entry point that most students overlook.

📅 Updated June 2026 ✍️ Vicky Sarin, CA, INSEAD ⏱ 10 min read 📚 Eduyush faculty insights · ACCA official fee schedule 2026

Eduyush is an ACCA Recognised Learning Partner and authorised BPP and Kaplan reseller. ACCA main qualification registration is £30 (₹3,900) — same whether you register direct or through Eduyush. The Eduyush saving is on DipIFR registration (£32 vs £89 direct = saving ₹7,410) and exemption fees (£15 per paper vs £84–£111 direct). All fees quoted at £1 = ₹130.

Quick answers for B.Com students

How many papers am I exempt from? Five — BT, MA, FA, TX, and LW. That's the entire Knowledge level plus TX and LW at Applied Skills. You enter ACCA directly at Applied Skills level with PM, FR, AA, and FM remaining, plus all of Strategic Professional. Total papers to sit: 8.

Can I get more exemptions? Yes — if you pass ACCA DipIFR, FR is also exempt, leaving you just PM, AA, and FM at Skills level. Total papers to sit drops to 7. Note: DipIFR requires at least 2–3 years of relevant work experience in financial reporting — it is designed for working professionals, not fresh graduates.

What does it cost to enrol? ACCA main qualification registration is £30 (₹3,900) — the same direct or via Eduyush. The saving through Eduyush is on exemption fees: £15 per paper vs £84–£111 direct. Five exemptions via Eduyush = ₹9,750 vs up to ₹60,450 direct. DipIFR registration: £32 (₹4,160) via Eduyush vs £89 (₹11,570) direct.

Should I jump straight into ACCA or do DipIFR first? If you are a recent graduate with less than 3 years of work experience: go straight into ACCA — you are not eligible for DipIFR yet. If you have 3+ years in financial reporting: DipIFR first is our strong recommendation. It is a real qualification, takes 3–4 months, exempts FR, and tells you honestly whether you can sustain professional study alongside work before committing the full ACCA investment.

5 → 6Papers exempt — 5 for most B.Com graduates, 6 if DipIFR passed (3+ years work ex required)
₹50,000+Saved on 5 exemption fees via Eduyush vs claiming directly with ACCA
8 or 7Papers left to sit — 8 via Route A, 7 via Route B with DipIFR

Your ACCA exemptions as a B.Com graduate

ACCA grants exemptions based on your degree subject and institution. Most recognised B.Com degrees from Indian universities qualify for the following five exemptions — but the exact papers depend on your specific university's recognition status with ACCA.

Paper Level Exemption status Direct exemption fee Via Eduyush
BT — Business & Technology Knowledge Exempt £84 (₹10,920) £15 (₹1,950)
MA — Management Accounting Knowledge Exempt £84 (₹10,920) £15 (₹1,950)
FA — Financial Accounting Knowledge Exempt £84 (₹10,920) £15 (₹1,950)
LW — Corporate & Business Law Applied Skills Exempt £111 (₹14,430) £15 (₹1,950)
TX — Taxation Applied Skills Exempt £111 (₹14,430) £15 (₹1,950)
FR — Financial Reporting Applied Skills Exempt if DipIFR passed (3+ years work ex required) £111 (₹14,430) £15 (₹1,950)

Check your specific university's exemption status

Not all B.Com degrees from all universities qualify for the same exemptions. ACCA's exemption calculator at accaglobal.com lets you enter your specific degree and institution. Some universities with lower ACCA recognition may grant fewer exemptions. Always verify before paying exemption fees.

Which papers remain after your exemptions

With five exemptions, here is exactly what is left between you and the ACCA qualification.

Route A: 5 exemptions (standard B.Com)

  • Applied Skills remaining: PM, FR, AA, FM
  • Strategic Professional: SBR, SBL + 2 options
  • Total papers to sit: 8
  • Realistic timeline (working): 3–4 years

Route B: 6 exemptions (B.Com + DipIFR — requires 3+ years work ex)

  • Applied Skills remaining: PM, AA, FM only
  • Strategic Professional: SBR, SBL + 2 options
  • Total papers to sit: 7
  • Realistic timeline (working): 2.5–3.5 years
  • Bonus: DipIFR is a standalone qualification with immediate LinkedIn value

The DipIFR-first strategy — for students with 3+ years of work experience

Here is the honest reality that most ACCA guides won't share: a significant number of B.Com students who enrol in ACCA — especially those who are working full-time — do not finish it. Life gets in the way. Exam fees accumulate. Study time competes with work. The qualification stalls after two or three papers and eventually lapses.

This is not a failure of the students. It is a failure of the entry decision — signing up without a realistic test of whether you can sustain ACCA-level study alongside a full-time job.

DipIFR is that test. But there is an important eligibility condition: DipIFR requires at least 2–3 years of relevant work experience in financial reporting or accounting. It is designed for working finance professionals, not recent graduates. If you are just starting out, go straight into ACCA. If you have been working in finance for 3+ years, DipIFR deserves serious consideration.

What DipIFR actually gives you

The ACCA Diploma in IFRS is a standalone, globally recognised qualification in International Financial Reporting Standards. It takes 3–4 months of focused study, has one exam, and is available four times a year. It is specifically designed for working finance professionals — not students. The content directly overlaps with FR (which it exempts) and feeds into SBR at Strategic level.

Here is why we recommend it as the starting point for most B.Com students who are working:

  • 1
It is a real qualification in its own right DipIFR adds a globally recognised IFRS credential to your CV immediately. Even if you decide ACCA isn't for you after completing it, you have something to show. Thousands of finance professionals — CFOs, group reporting managers, Big 4 seniors — hold DipIFR as a standalone credential. Your LinkedIn profile changes the day you complete it.
  • 2
It is an honest test of your stamina for ACCA DipIFR is hard enough that completing it tells you something real about your ability to sustain professional study alongside work. If you find 3–4 months of DipIFR study manageable, ACCA's remaining 7 papers are a commitment you can plan for. If DipIFR proves too much to balance with your current role, you've spent ₹4,160 instead of ₹3+ lakh to find out.
  • 3
It exempts FR from ACCA Passing DipIFR exempts you from FR at Applied Skills level. FR is a significant paper — consolidation-heavy, IFRS-intensive, and one of the harder Applied Skills papers. Having it exempted means you enter ACCA's Skills level with PM, AA, and FM remaining rather than four papers. That is a meaningful reduction in remaining workload.
  • 4
The IFRS knowledge directly accelerates SBR SBR at Strategic Professional level is essentially IFRS at greater depth. Students who enter ACCA with DipIFR already behind them find SBR dramatically more efficient to study — they are deepening knowledge rather than building it from scratch. The preparation time for SBR reduces noticeably.
"I did DipIFR first because my manager suggested it. I passed and it genuinely changed how my team saw me — group reporting questions started coming my way. Then I enrolled in ACCA properly. Knowing I could handle 4 months of DipIFR study after work gave me the confidence to commit. I've now passed PM and AA. I wouldn't have done ACCA without that first test." — Finance executive, Bengaluru (composite from Eduyush student feedback)
ACCA DipIFR registration via Eduyush — £32 (₹4,160) vs £89 (₹11,570) direct with ACCA. Saving: ₹7,410. Includes study materials guidance and exam registration support. Register for DipIFR →

Should you jump straight into ACCA full qualification?

The honest answer: it depends on your situation. The DipIFR-first route is not right for everyone. Here is how to think about it.

Your situation Recommendation Reason
Recent B.Com graduate, less than 3 years work experience Straight into ACCA DipIFR eligibility requires 2–3 years of relevant financial reporting experience. If you don't have this, ACCA direct is the only route. The good news: your MA and accounting knowledge from B.Com is genuinely useful preparation for PM, FR, and AA.
Working in finance, 3+ years experience, limited study time (8–12 hrs/week) DipIFR first You are eligible and the stamina test makes sense at this stage. DipIFR is a low-cost way to earn a credential, test your capacity, and exempt FR before committing the full ACCA investment.
Working in finance, 3+ years, strong IFRS exposure (Big 4, group reporting) Straight into ACCA Your daily work already provides the IFRS foundation DipIFR builds. You know you can handle the content — go directly to ACCA and use that knowledge advantage on FR and SBR.
Working in non-finance role, career-switching, 3+ years experience DipIFR first You are learning content from scratch alongside an unrelated job. DipIFR is a realistic test of whether you can make the transition before committing to ACCA's full timeline and cost.
Employer is paying fees or providing study leave Straight into ACCA When employer support reduces financial risk, the beta test argument weakens. Commit to ACCA directly and use the employer support fully.

The paper sequence for B.Com students

Once you have decided your route, here is the session-by-session sequence for each path. The logic behind the sequence is the same as the general ACCA paper order — FR before SBR, AA feeds AAA, don't combine PM and FM — but adapted for the specific papers B.Com students have remaining.

Route A: 5 exemptions, FR still to sit (PM, FR, AA, FM + Strategic)

Session Papers Why
Session 1 PM Start with PM alone. It links back to your B.Com management accounting knowledge — costing and variance will feel familiar. It is also the most failed Applied Skills paper, so it deserves full attention from the start.
Session 2 FR + AA The most important pairing. FR's IFRS and consolidation content directly supports AA's risk assessment. Do these together — the content overlap reduces total study time. After these two, move straight to Strategic without a gap.
Session 3 FM FM alone completes Applied Skills. It is numerically demanding and deserves its own session. Move immediately to Strategic level after FM — FM knowledge for AFM is at its freshest now.
Session 4 SBR Immediately after FR. Your IFRS consolidation knowledge is live. SBR is FR at greater depth — the shorter the gap, the less re-learning required.
Session 5 First option AAA if AA was your strongest Skills paper. AFM if FM was your strongest. Your Skills-level knowledge is still recent.
Session 6 SBL alone Give SBL its own sitting. The 4-hour integrated case study format requires dedicated preparation. This is the paper most damaged by trying to share a session.
Session 7 Second option Complete the qualification. APM pairs with AFM; ATX pairs with AAA.

Route B: 6 exemptions, DipIFR done, FR exempt (PM, AA, FM + Strategic)

Session Papers Why
Session 1 PM + AA With FR exempted by DipIFR, there is no dependency forcing FR before AA. PM and AA can be sat together — PM is numerical/analytical, AA is conceptual/written. Different modes make the combined preparation manageable.
Session 2 FM FM alone completes Applied Skills. Move straight to Strategic level. Your DipIFR IFRS knowledge has already bridged into SBR — you are starting Strategic from a stronger position than most.
Session 3 SBR Your DipIFR knowledge is the foundation. SBR will feel like deepening what you already know rather than learning from scratch. This is the biggest advantage of the DipIFR-first route.
Session 4 First option + SBL If you are confident, SBL + one option in the same session is workable. If study time is limited, give SBL its own session — it is always safer alone.
Session 5 Second option Complete the qualification.

Route B: 1 fewer paper and 2 fewer sessions than Route A

DipIFR exempts FR, reducing your papers to sit from 8 to 7. More practically, it also removes the FR → AA dependency, allowing PM and AA to be combined in the same session rather than kept apart. The combination of one fewer paper and one fewer forced single session typically saves two full exam sessions — roughly 6–8 months off your ACCA timeline.

Full fee breakdown: what ACCA actually costs a B.Com student in India

The Eduyush saving — what it adds up to

The ACCA main qualification registration fee is £30 — the same whether you go direct or through Eduyush. Where the saving is significant is on exemption fees and DipIFR registration.

Five exemptions via Eduyush at £15 each = ₹9,750. Five exemptions direct with ACCA at £84–£111 each = up to ₹61,620. That is a saving of ₹51,870 on exemptions alone — roughly the cost of your entire Applied Skills study materials budget.

DipIFR registration via Eduyush: £32 (₹4,160). Direct with ACCA: £89 (₹11,570). Saving: ₹7,410.

Why the exemption fee difference exists

ACCA charges its published exemption fee — £84–£111 per paper — to students who register independently. Recognised Learning Partners like Eduyush negotiate discounted rates as part of their ACCA partnership. The £15 per exemption rate is available only through ACCA Recognised Learning Partners. If you register directly with ACCA first and then approach a learning partner, the exemption fees are already locked in at the higher rate. Register through Eduyush before claiming exemptions — the fee is set at the point of claiming, not the point of passing.

Is ACCA worth it after B.Com? The honest ROI

This is the question most B.Com students are really asking when they research ACCA. Not "is it possible?" but "is it worth the time and money given where I am now?"

The answer depends on your career direction. Here is the honest version.

Career direction ACCA verdict Why
Big 4 / MNC audit, finance, advisory Strong yes Big 4 India, UAE, and GCC offices explicitly list ACCA in job requirements for audit and advisory roles. ACCA members are eligible for the same roles as qualified CAs in many MNC environments. The return on investment — measured in salary differential and role access — is clear and documented.
GCC / UAE finance roles Strong yes UAE and GCC employers recognise ACCA as the primary professional accounting qualification. ACCA members consistently command salaries 30–50% above non-qualified finance professionals in the region. Tax-free income amplifies the ROI significantly.
Domestic India mid-market finance Conditional In purely domestic roles at smaller Indian companies, ACCA's recognition is lower than CA. The qualification still adds value, but the salary premium is less pronounced. If your career is entirely India-domestic and non-Big-4, the ROI timeline is longer.
IFRS-heavy roles (group reporting, Big 4 TRA) Strong yes ACCA SBR + DipIFR is one of the strongest combinations available for IFRS technical roles. Group reporting teams in MNCs and Big 4 technical review and advisory specifically value this combination.
Career switch into finance from another field Yes, with DipIFR first DipIFR gives you an immediate credential that opens doors before the full ACCA investment. Then ACCA builds on it. The two-step approach is lower risk and higher ROI for career changers than going straight to full ACCA.
"I passed DipIFR working as a finance executive and got a Big 4 TRA role off the back of it — before I'd even started ACCA. My manager told me the DipIFR was what got my CV noticed. I'm now halfway through ACCA Strategic level. The two-step approach genuinely worked." — Finance professional, Mumbai (composite from Eduyush student feedback)

Who should not do ACCA after B.Com right now

Honest negative filtering is more useful than promotional enthusiasm. Here are the situations where starting ACCA immediately after B.Com is probably the wrong decision.

Consider waiting or choosing a different path if:

You are studying for CA Final simultaneously. CA and ACCA have overlapping content but very different exam styles. Splitting preparation between them typically means neither gets the attention it needs. Finish CA Final first, then consider ACCA — or the CIA Challenge Exam, which is a faster route to a global credential for qualified CAs.

Your employer is not in finance and has no international dimension. ACCA's highest ROI is in Big 4, MNC, and GCC environments. If your current and foreseeable career is domestic mid-market India, the 3–4 year time investment may be better directed elsewhere — CMA India, for example, has stronger domestic recognition.

You genuinely cannot find 8–10 hours per week to study. This is the most common reason B.Com students don't finish ACCA. The qualification is not beyond B.Com graduates in difficulty — it is beyond the study hours many working students realistically have available. Be honest with yourself about this before committing.

You want a quick win. ACCA takes 2.5–4 years working full-time. If you need a credential in the next 6 months, DipIFR is the right answer. ACCA is a 3–5 year commitment, not a shortcut.

Frequently asked questions

Do all B.Com degrees get the same ACCA exemptions?

No. ACCA's exemptions are granted based on your specific degree and the institution that awarded it. Most recognised B.Com degrees from Indian universities get five exemptions (BT, MA, FA, LW, TX), but some programmes with specific accounting modules may qualify for more. Use ACCA's exemption calculator on accaglobal.com to confirm your exact entitlement before paying any fees.

If I pass DipIFR, do I automatically get FR exempt from ACCA?

Yes — ACCA grants an exemption from FR to students who have passed DipIFR. You need to claim this exemption through MyACCA when you register for ACCA. The exemption fee applies (£15 via Eduyush). It is not applied automatically.

Should I claim all 5 exemptions immediately, or sit some papers?

Claim all five. The exemption fee (£15 per paper via Eduyush) is much lower than the cost of sitting and potentially resitting the paper. More importantly, the Knowledge level papers — BT, MA, FA — cover content you already know from B.Com. Sitting them to "make sure" is a poor use of money and time. LW and TX, similarly, align closely with B.Com law and taxation content. Claim all five and direct your energy to the papers that genuinely challenge you.

What is the difference between ACCA DipIFR and ACCA full qualification?

DipIFR is a standalone diploma focused specifically on IFRS — one paper, no PER requirement, completed in 3–4 months. It does not make you an ACCA member. Full ACCA is the complete professional qualification — 13 papers (or fewer with exemptions), a 3-year PER requirement, an ethics module, and membership once everything is complete. DipIFR is a meaningful credential in its own right, particularly for IFRS-facing roles, but it is not equivalent to full ACCA membership.

I'm a B.Com student who has also passed CA Inter. Do I get more exemptions?

Potentially yes. CA Intermediate passing may qualify for additional Applied Skills exemptions beyond the standard five B.Com exemptions. Check the ACCA exemption calculator with your specific CA Intermediate results. The combination of B.Com + CA Inter can sometimes result in 6–7 exemptions depending on marks and modules passed.

How long does ACCA take after B.Com if I am working full-time?

Realistically, 3–4 years for Route A (8 papers), or 2.5–3.5 years for Route B (7 papers via DipIFR). These timelines assume 1–2 papers per session with first-attempt passes. Each resit adds one session (3 months). Working professionals who try to rush by sitting 3+ papers per session consistently take longer overall due to the higher resit rate.

Can I do ACCA alongside my job without coaching?

Yes — many B.Com students successfully self-study ACCA, particularly those with relevant work experience. BPP study materials cover the full syllabus and BPP ECR provides recorded lecture access for students who occasionally need tutor explanation. For the harder papers — PM, AAA, AFM — having access to coaching or recorded lectures significantly improves first-attempt pass rates. See our best ACCA online courses guide for a comparison of coaching options.

Is ACCA better than CA for a B.Com graduate?

This is probably the most searched question among B.Com students considering ACCA. The honest answer is that neither is universally better — the right choice depends on where you want to work and what kind of career you are building.

Your situation Better choice
You want to build a career in Indian domestic practice — audit, tax, compliance CA
You want global mobility — Big 4 internationally, GCC, MNC group finance ACCA
You are targeting UAE or GCC specifically ACCA
You are already 2+ years into CA and sitting for Final Finish CA first
You want IFRS-heavy roles — group reporting, Big 4 TRA, MNC technical ACCA + DipIFR
You want the fastest route to a global credential as a B.Com graduate ACCA
Your employer is a domestic mid-market Indian company with no international work CA

The practical difference in India in 2026

CA remains the gold standard for domestic Indian practice. In Big 4 India, ACCA and CA are broadly equivalent for most roles — both qualify you for audit, advisory, and finance positions. Where ACCA has a clear advantage is in international mobility: UAE, GCC, UK, and most MNC group finance teams recognise ACCA as readily as CA, whereas CA recognition outside India is limited without additional conversion. If your career has any international dimension, ACCA is the practical choice.

Can an average B.Com student pass ACCA?

Yes — and this deserves a direct answer because it is one of the biggest emotional barriers students face before enrolling.

ACCA is not a qualification for exceptional students only. It is designed for working professionals across a wide range of academic backgrounds. The Applied Skills papers — the level where most B.Com students start — test the ability to apply knowledge to business scenarios, not to reproduce complex theory. The pass mark is 50%. The exam format rewards clear, structured thinking and good exam technique as much as raw academic ability.

What matters more than your B.Com grades is consistency of effort. Students who study regularly over months — even 8–10 hours a week — consistently outperform students who study intensively for a few weeks before each exam. ACCA rewards the steady, disciplined approach that suits working professionals better than the exam-sprint approach that works in university.

The harder question is not whether you can pass the papers — most B.Com graduates can. The harder question is whether you can sustain the effort for 3–4 years alongside a full-time job. That is the real filter, and DipIFR (for those eligible) is the honest way to test it before committing.

Not ready for full ACCA yet? A lower-friction starting point

If you are not yet sure about ACCA, here is a progression that builds credentials at each stage without over-committing:

  • Step 1 — CMA India or EA (Enrolled Agent): Either qualification can be completed in 6–12 months and gives you a recognised professional credential immediately. CMA India has strong domestic recognition. EA (IRS Enrolled Agent) opens US tax advisory roles. Both are meaningful career credentials in their own right.
  • Step 2 — DipIFR (if 3+ years work experience): Adds IFRS expertise, exempts FR from ACCA, and gives you the stamina test. Takes 3–4 months.
  • Step 3 — ACCA full qualification: With CMA/EA behind you, DipIFR done, and FR exempt, you enter ACCA at its most efficient — motivated, credentialled, and with 7 papers remaining instead of 8.
