ACCA Strategic Professional Transition 2027: The Two-Options Rule, the EPSM Deadline and Your 7-Year Clock
The exam requirement drops from four papers to three at transition — which means some students can legitimately stop one exam early. Here is exactly how the rules work, and the one £83 decision almost everyone should make before mid-July 2027.
The short answer: Strategic Professional students move to the redesigned Strategic Professional level in September 2027 with credit for every equivalent exam passed: SBR→S1, SBL→S2, AAA→SAA, AFM→SCF, ATX→STA, APM→SPI. Under current rules you need both Essentials plus two Options to complete the exam element — and that stays true for every sitting up to June 2027. But the redesigned level needs only one Option. So if you reach transition with both Essentials and one Option passed, you are awarded the Strategic Professional Certificate at transition, under the redesigned rules — without ever sitting a second Option. Separately: complete the Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM) by mid-July 2027 (~£83, ~20 hours) and you get full credit for its ~60-hour chargeable replacement. Verify your own position in ACCAs official Transition Tool, and see the full redesign in the ACCA Syllabus Changes 2027 complete guide.
Do I need one or two Options exams?
Two if you want to finish under current rules (last session June 2027). One if you carry both Essentials plus one Option into the September 2027 transition — the certificate is then awarded under the redesigned requirement of a single Option.
What is the most time-sensitive action?
EPSM. Complete it by mid-July 2027 for roughly £83 and ~20 hours, and you receive full credit for the Ethical, Sustainable Leadership module — expected to take ~60 hours and be chargeable (price confirmed January 2027).
Does the 7-year rule change in 2027?
No. It applies unchanged, it covers Strategic Professional only, and lapsed passes are not restored at transition.
What changes at Strategic Professional in September 2027
The redesigned Strategic Professional level keeps two mandatory Essentials exams and cuts the Options requirement in half: S1 Business and Sustainability Reporting and S2 Strategic Business Leader, plus one Option chosen from five — SAA, SCF, STA, SPI and the brand-new SDS Data Science Professional, which has no current equivalent. The level remains benchmarked at RQF Level 7 (Master’s degree level), and the 3 hours 15 minutes exam format continues. New-structure exams begin in September 2027; the last session under current rules is June 2027.
S1 replaces SBR with an expanded sustainability reporting focus. A useful consequence: passing SBR now earns automatic credit for S1, so you complete that requirement under the syllabus and format you have already prepared for rather than the redesigned one.
Your credit map: what carries forward
| Redesigned element | Current exam that earns credit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| S1 Business and Sustainability Reporting | SBR Strategic Business Reporting | Essential — both S1 and S2 required |
| S2 Strategic Business Leader | SBL Strategic Business Leader | Essential — both S1 and S2 required |
| SAA Audit and Assurance Professional | AAA Advanced Audit and Assurance | Only one Option required in the redesigned qualification |
| SCF Corporate Finance Professional | AFM Advanced Financial Management | |
| STA Taxation Advisory Professional | ATX Advanced Taxation | |
| SPI Performance and Insights Professional | APM Advanced Performance Management | |
| SDS Data Science Professional | None — new exam | |
| Ethical, Sustainable Leadership EEM | EPSM completed pre-transition = full credit | Required for affiliate status under redesigned rules |
The two-options rule, done properly
This is the most misunderstood part of the transition, so let’s be precise about what ACCA’s confirmed transition rules actually say:
Until June 2027, the current requirements apply in full. Completing the exam element before transition means both Essentials and two Options. One Option is not enough to finish early — there is no early application of the new rules.
At transition, students receive credit for equivalent exams passed, and the redesigned requirement — both Essentials plus one Option — is applied to that credit. ACCA’s transition guidance confirms it directly: if you receive credit for both Essentials, one Options exam and the Ethical, Sustainable Leadership module at transition, you will be awarded the ACCA Strategic Professional Certificate. The award happens at transition, not before it.
Practically, this creates a genuine choice for anyone holding both Essentials plus one Option today. Sit a second Option by June 2027 and you complete the exam element months earlier, becoming an affiliate sooner and adding a second specialism. Or sit nothing further and collect the certificate in September 2027 with one fewer exam, one fewer entry fee, and one less revision cycle. Neither is wrong — it is a trade of roughly three months of progression against one full Strategic paper. ACCA’s own framing is worth noting too: every Options exam deepens technical expertise that supports your career, so “skip it” is not automatically the smarter play — it is simply now a permitted one.
The EPSM deadline: the cheapest ethics module you will ever do
The Eduyush take: whatever your exam position, EPSM before mid-July 2027 is close to a free option. It costs approximately £83 and takes about 20 hours. Its replacement — the Ethical, Sustainable Leadership Essential Employability Module — is expected to take about 60 hours and will be chargeable, with pricing confirmed in January 2027. Complete EPSM pre-transition and you receive full credit for the new module. Miss the deadline and you do the longer, chargeable version as a condition of affiliate status (or, for existing affiliates, membership). ACCA also continues to recommend completing EPSM before attempting any current Strategic Professional exam, because its professional-skills content directly supports the exam style. There is no scenario in which waiting is cheaper.
For affiliates specifically: if you are already an affiliate and have completed EPSM, nothing changes — credit is awarded. If you are an affiliate who has not completed EPSM at transition, you keep your affiliate status but must complete the Ethical, Sustainable Leadership module as part of the membership requirements. Full detail in the exact deadline dates (to be confirmed by ACCA) will follow closer to transition.
The 7-year rule through the transition
The 7-year rule is unchanged in the redesign, and three things matter for planning:
The clock keeps running through transition. Your seven years started with your first Strategic Professional pass and does not reset in September 2027. Lapsed passes are not restored. If a pass expires under the current rules, transition does not revive it — you would sit the redesigned equivalent (an expired AAA pass means sitting SAA, and so on). The rule applies only at Strategic Professional — Applied Skills and Knowledge passes never expire. If any of your Strategic passes are approaching year six or seven, that — not the redesign — should drive your exam scheduling. We cover restart scenarios in depth in a dedicated 7-year rule guide coming in this series.

Where do you stand? Four scenarios
Both Essentials + 2 Options done
Your exam element is complete under current rules. Complete EPSM by mid-July 2027 if you have not already, and push on with PER — membership needs 36 months of supervised experience plus Performance Objectives, unchanged in 2027.
Finish EPSM + PER
Both Essentials + 1 Option done
You have a real choice. Sit a second Option by June 2027 to become an affiliate sooner — or sit nothing and receive the Strategic Professional Certificate at transition under the one-Option rule. Do EPSM by mid-July 2027 either way; with EPSM credited, your transition award includes affiliate-track requirements.
Your call — both routes finish
1 Option done, Essentials pending
Prioritise SBL and SBR. Your Option already covers the redesigned Options requirement in full, so every remaining sitting spent on Essentials moves you toward completion — and an SBR pass converts straight into S1 credit, ahead of the format change.
Essentials first
Just starting Strategic
Do EPSM first — ACCA recommends it before any Strategic exam and it locks in the cheap version. Then take SBR and SBL through the 2026–27 sessions; any pass carries full credit, and your 7-year clock only starts with your first Strategic pass.
EPSM, then Essentials

Strategic Professional transition FAQs
Do I need one or two Options exams to finish?
Two under current rules, which apply to every sitting up to June 2027. One under the redesigned rules from September 2027. If you hold both Essentials plus one Option at transition, the certificate is awarded at transition under the redesigned one-Option requirement.
I have both Essentials and one Option. Can I get the certificate before September 2027?
No. There is no early application of the new rules — before transition, the current requirement of two Options stands. The award under the one-Option rule happens at transition itself, per ACCA’s confirmed transition arrangements.
What happens to my SBR and SBL passes?
SBR converts to credit for S1 Business and Sustainability Reporting, and SBL converts to credit for S2 Strategic Business Leader. Both Essentials remain mandatory in the redesigned structure.
What if I miss the EPSM deadline?
You would complete the Ethical, Sustainable Leadership Essential Employability Module instead — expected to take around 60 hours and chargeable, with pricing confirmed in January 2027. Existing affiliates who have not done EPSM keep affiliate status but need the new module for membership. EPSM must be completed by mid-July 2027 (exact date to be confirmed by ACCA).
Does the 7-year rule change in the redesign?
No. You must complete the Strategic Professional exams within seven years of your first Strategic Professional pass, exactly as today. The rule applies only at this level.
Will lapsed passes be restored at transition?
No. Passes that expire under the 7-year rule are not revived in September 2027. An expired pass means sitting the redesigned equivalent exam.
Which Option should I choose now?
Choose by career specialism — every current Option maps to a redesigned equivalent (AAA→SAA, AFM→SCF, ATX→STA, APM→SPI), so no current choice strands you. The only Option you cannot take yet is SDS Data Science Professional, which is new in September 2027 with no legacy equivalent.
Will employers treat a pre-2027 and post-2027 qualification differently?
No. Both routes lead to the same ACCA membership, and employers do not distinguish between students who qualified under the current structure and those who qualify under the redesigned one.
