ACCA Applied Skills Transition 2027: What Every Skills-Level Student Must Do Before June 2027

Your passed papers carry forward one-for-one. But whether you owe ACCA a chargeable 100-hour module — or skip it entirely — comes down to one deadline.

By Vicky Sarin, CA · Founder, Eduyush · Updated July 2026 · 9 min read

The short answer: If you are at the Applied Skills level, you move to the new Expertise level at transition in September 2027, with full credit for every paper you have passed (TX→E1, FR→E2, AA→E3, FM→E4, PM→E5). Two rules decide how smooth this is. Rule 1: if you finish all six Applied Skills exams — including Corporate and Business Law (LW) — before transition, you are exempt from the Digital Tech and Innovation Essential Employability Module, a chargeable module expected to take around 100 hours. Rule 2: if LW is still outstanding at transition, you must enter the K3 Business Law exam before or at the same time as any Expertise exam. The last session for the current Applied Skills exams is June 2027; LW can be taken on-demand until July 2027. For the full 13-to-11 redesign picture, start with the ACCA Syllabus Changes 2027 complete guide.

Do Applied Skills students lose any passed papers in 2027?

No. Every passed Applied Skills paper converts into credit for its Expertise-level equivalent. Nothing you have passed is wasted.

What is the single biggest money-saver?

Completing all six Applied Skills exams (including LW) before transition. That exempts you from the chargeable ~100-hour Digital Tech and Innovation module, which must otherwise be purchased before you can enter Strategic Professional exams.

    What is the hard deadline?

June 2027 is the last exam session for the current Applied Skills papers. The on-demand LW exam (ENG and GLO variants) runs slightly later, until July 2027.

What happens to Applied Skills in September 2027

Under the redesigned ACCA Qualification, the Applied Skills level becomes the Expertise level, and six papers become five. Corporate and Business Law (LW) moves down to the Knowledge level as K3 Business Law, and the remaining five papers map directly to E1–E5. The award at the end of the level is unchanged — you still receive the ACCA Advanced Diploma in Accounting and Business, now benchmarked at Level 6 of the UK RQF (Bachelor’s degree level). Expertise exams sit for the first time in September 2027.

If you complete the Applied Skills level in full before transition, you move straight onto the Strategic Professional level of the redesigned qualification — no Expertise-level obligations at all.

Your credit map: what carries forward

Redesigned Expertise element Current paper that earns credit If not passed by transition
E1 Taxation TX Taxation Sit E1
E2 Financial Reporting FR Financial Reporting Sit E2
E3 Audit, Risk and Control AA Audit and Assurance Sit E3
E4 Finance and Investment FM Financial Management Sit E4
E5 Performance with Data Analysis PM Performance Management Sit E5
K3 Business Law (Knowledge level) LW Corporate and Business Law Sit K3 before or with your first Expertise exam
Digital Tech and Innovation EEM All six Applied Skills exams (incl. LW) passed pre-transition = exempt Complete the ~100-hour chargeable module; must be purchased before entering Strategic Professional exams

Confirm your personal mapping in ACCA’s official Transition Tool.

The LW rule: why Business Law jumps the queue

LW is the only Applied Skills paper moving down a level. In the redesigned qualification it becomes K3 Business Law at the Knowledge level — and ACCA’s progression rules say students who have not passed LW must enter K3 before or at the same time as entering any Expertise exam. In practice, an unpassed LW becomes a gate on your whole level.

The good news: both the LW-ENG and LW-GLO variants are on-demand computer-based exams. You do not need to wait for a session — you can book and sit LW any time up to July 2027. If LW is on your outstanding list, it should almost certainly be your next exam. Choosing between the ENG and GLO variants — and exactly what the replacement K3 exam tests — is covered in our K3 Business Law syllabus guide.

The 100-hour exemption: the real money on the table

The Eduyush take: the Digital Tech and Innovation EEM is the single biggest financial and time consequence of the 2027 transition for Applied Skills students. It is expected to take around 100 hours, it is chargeable (price to be confirmed by ACCA in January 2027), and under the progression rules it must be purchased before you can enter Strategic Professional exams. The exemption test is all-or-nothing: complete every Applied Skills exam, including LW, before transition and you owe nothing. Fall one paper short and the full module applies. If you are three or fewer papers away, a focused push through the December 2026, March 2027 and June 2027 sessions is very likely worth it — weigh roughly 100 hours plus a module fee against one or two extra exam sittings.

Note the module availability caveat: Essential Employability Modules are expected from early 2027, with exact dates to be confirmed by ACCA, and prices will be confirmed in January 2027.

Deadlines that matter for Skills-level students

Dec 2026 / Mar 2027 / Jun 2027 — your remaining session-based exam windows (TX, FR, AA, FM, PM). June 2027 is the final session under current rules.
July 2027 — last chance to sit the on-demand LW exam (ENG or GLO).
Mid-July 2027 — deadline to complete the Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM) under current rules (exact date to be confirmed by ACCA). EPSM costs about £83 and takes ~20 hours; its replacement at Strategic level is expected to take ~60 hours and will be chargeable.
September 2027 — transition. Expertise-level exams begin; your credits are applied automatically.

One more current-rules detail: to receive the Advanced Diploma under the current requirements you also need EPSM completed by mid-July 2027. Under the redesigned rules, the Advanced Diploma is awarded on completing the Expertise level including its EEM. Full exam session dates are in our ACCA exam dates guide.

Where do you stand? Three scenarios

All 6 done (or done by June 2027)

You skip the Expertise level entirely and move straight to Strategic Professional in September 2027. No Digital Tech and Innovation module. Consider completing EPSM before mid-July 2027 while it is still the cheap, 20-hour version.

    Best position — hold course

    4–5 papers done

You are within reach of the 100-hour exemption. Map your remaining papers across December 2026, March 2027 and June 2027 — and if LW is one of them, book it on-demand now rather than queuing it behind session exams.

Push to finish — exemption in reach

LW outstanding, unsure on the rest

Prioritise LW regardless. It is on-demand, it is foundational for later papers, and an unpassed LW becomes the K3 gate on all your Expertise entries after transition. Then reassess how many session papers are realistic before June 2027.

    Do LW first

    Applied Skills transition FAQs

Do Applied Skills students have to restart anything in 2027?

No. All students at the Applied Skills level at transition move onto the Expertise level with credit for every equivalent paper already passed: TX→E1, FR→E2, AA→E3, FM→E4, PM→E5 and LW→K3. Nothing is lost.

What happens if I have not passed LW by the transition?

You will be required to pass K3 Business Law, which sits at the Knowledge level of the redesigned qualification. You must enter K3 before or at the same time as entering any Expertise exam. LW remains available on-demand until July 2027, so passing it beforehand is usually the simpler route.

What is the Digital Tech and Innovation module and can I avoid it?

It is the Essential Employability Module attached to the Expertise level — chargeable (price confirmed January 2027) and expected to take around 100 hours. You avoid it entirely by completing all six Applied Skills exams, including LW, before transition. If it applies to you, it must be purchased before you can enter Strategic Professional exams.

What is the deadline to finish Applied Skills under current rules?

The June 2027 exam session is the last sitting for the session-based Applied Skills papers. The on-demand LW exam has a slightly later completion date of July 2027.

Will I still get the Advanced Diploma in Accounting and Business?

Yes. The award is the same under both structures. Under current rules you need all six exams plus EPSM (by mid-July 2027). Under the redesigned rules it is awarded on completing the Expertise level, including the Digital Tech and Innovation module where required.

Should I do EPSM now even though I am only at Applied Skills?

It is worth serious consideration. EPSM costs about £83 and takes roughly 20 hours; students who complete it before transition receive full credit for the Ethical, Sustainable Leadership module at Strategic Professional, which is expected to take about 60 hours and will be chargeable. ACCA also recommends completing EPSM before attempting Strategic Professional exams.

Will employers treat the pre-2027 and post-2027 qualification differently?

No. Both routes lead to the same ACCA membership. Employers do not distinguish between students who qualified under the current structure and those who qualify under the redesigned one.
