ACCA SBL technical articles β€” complete index by syllabus area, with exam tips

This is a complete, organised index of every official ACCA Strategic Business Leader (SBL) technical article and tutor video β€” grouped by ACCA's own syllabus areas (A–H), linked to the current source pages, and annotated with an Eduyush insight on how each topic is examined.

SBL is unlike any other ACCA exam: a single four-hour case study with no optional questions, where 20 of the 100 marks are Professional Skills rather than technical knowledge. You can't pass on models alone β€” you have to apply them to the organisation in front of you and communicate like a real adviser.

How SBL is examined: a single four-hour exam built around one organisation's scenario, with all tasks compulsory. 80 marks are for technical application across the syllabus; 20 marks are Professional Skills β€” communication, commercial acumen, analysis, scepticism and evaluation. There is no separate reading time and no choice of questions, so breadth across areas A–H matters. Pass mark 50%. See how SBL compares across all papers β†’
The thing that catches people out: SBL rewards applied judgement, not memorised frameworks. The marks come from using a model (the cultural web, Porter's, COSO ERM, the integrated report framework) to reach a conclusion about the scenario organisation, presented in the right format (a report, briefing notes, an email) for the right audience. Read each article below for the framework, then practise applying it to a past case.

Syllabus area ALeadership

Responsible leadership

Insight: What it means to lead responsibly in a volatile environment without harming stakeholders β€” a recurring framing for ethics-and-leadership tasks.

Culture and configurationHigh frequency

Insight: Preparing and evaluating the cultural web, plus organisational structure and configuration β€” the cultural web is one of SBL's most-tested models.

Ethical decision making

Insight: The main ethical decision-making frameworks β€” apply them to a dilemma in the scenario rather than listing the steps.

Syllabus area BGovernance

Environmental and sustainability issues

Insight: Balancing shareholder returns against wider stakeholder and environmental duties β€” increasingly central to SBL given the ESG focus.

All about stakeholders – part 1

Insight: Introduces stakeholders and how they're categorised β€” the basis for Mendelow-style mapping in the exam.

Insight: The benefits and costs of board diversity, with the regulatory backdrop β€” a ready source of balanced evaluation points.

Independence as a concept in corporate governance

Insight: Why independence matters across governance and professional behaviour β€” underpins NED and audit-committee tasks.

Public sector governance

Insight: The distinctive governance themes for public-sector bodies β€” useful when the scenario isn't a listed company.

The integrated report framework

Insight: The IIRC framework principles and the six capitals β€” a recurring requirement to evaluate or draft elements of an integrated report.

Syllabus area CStrategy

Growing in partnership

Insight: Growth through strategic partnerships and the risks of standing still β€” feeds strategic-choice evaluations.

Market segmentation

Insight: Segmentation as a strategic analysis and positioning tool β€” apply it to the scenario's markets, don't just define the bases.

The strategic planning process – part 1

Insight: Breaks strategic planning into manageable areas and applies it to a scenario β€” the analysis half of a strategy task.

The strategic planning process – part 2

Insight: Strategic choice and implementation β€” the "so what do we do" half. Read both parts together.

Syllabus area DRisk

Four lines of defence and assurance mapping

Insight: How assurance mapping links to the lines of defence to show how risks are managed β€” a practical governance-and-risk crossover.

Quick answersSBL technical articles β€” FAQ

Start with the high-frequency models and skills: culture and configuration (the cultural web), financial analysis in SBL, applying big data and data analytics, and COSO's enterprise risk management. Then read across areas B (governance) and H (change) so you can handle whichever direction the single case study takes.
SBL is a single four-hour exam built around one organisation's scenario, with all tasks compulsory and no optional questions. 80 marks are for technical application across syllabus areas A–H and 20 marks are for Professional Skills β€” communication, commercial acumen, analysis, scepticism and evaluation. The pass mark is 50%.
20 of SBL's 100 marks are awarded for how you demonstrate professional skills β€” communicating in the right format for the audience, showing commercial acumen, analysing information, exercising professional scepticism and evaluating options. Candidates who show strong technical knowledge but weak professional skills often fall short, so practise answering in report or briefing format, not in note form.
You need to know the models, but the marks come from applying them to the scenario and reaching a conclusion, not from reproducing the diagram. Use the technical articles and videos to learn each framework, then practise applying it to a past case study under time pressure.
