Continuing professional education (CPE) is synonymous with professional development. It can be defined as any learning activity undertaken to maintain, improve or broaden the knowledge and skills of practising accountants. The AICPA’s Professional Ethics Executive Committee has developed a definition of CPE that applies to activities that foster the professional competence of individual CPAs.
“Any accounting and non-accounting educational activity through which a CPA maintains, improves or broadens his or her knowledge and skills to provide quality services to clients and employers, meet their professional responsibilities, or fulfil the requirements for licensure or certification.”
